About Amoda Maa
Amoda Maa is a contemporary spiritual teacher and author known for her uncompromising clarity and deep transmission of love.
Her work is rooted in the invitation to awaken to the luminous truth of our essential nature—unbroken awareness—and to meet all of life in openness.
Born in Cyprus and raised in the UK, Amoda’s early life was marked by inner sensitivity and a sense of not belonging. After a traumatic childhood and the experience of war and displacement, a profound existential longing emerged that would lead her far beyond conventional pathways. This longing shaped her academic and personal pursuits, including many years of studying psychology at the University of London, where she received a BSc and undertook seven years of doctoral research. But a persistent inner disquiet, coupled with a long period of depression, eventually prompted her to leave academia behind in search of something deeper.
For more than a decade, she immersed herself in a wide range of psycho-spiritual teachings and practices. These included Buddhist and Zen meditation, Tantric energy-work, Shamanic healing, Rebirthing breath-work, and transpersonal psychology. She was especially drawn to the writings of Carl Jung, Krishnamurti, Osho, and the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.
In the early 1990s, she traveled to India, where she spent time at the Osho Ashram in Pune. Immersed in a field of radical meditation and cathartic processes, she underwent a deep inner purification and experienced a falling away of many layers of fear. It was here, in surrendering to life itself as the teacher, that the seed of embodied presence was quietly planted.
Back in London, she created a transformational method that combined breathwork, movement, and emotional catharsis, offering workshops and retreats which gained a strong presence within London’s alternative healing and spiritual scene. Although her work felt vibrant, her inner life was simple—rooted in meditation, deep inquiry, and surrender to what is.
Then, in 2002, in the midst of existential aloneness, there was a profound shift in consciousness. With no method and no teacher, a radical awakening occurred—a dissolution of ego-identity and a merging with the ground of being. This was not a spiritual high but a death and rebirth that changed the fabric of perception. All seeking came to an end, and what remained was an unshakeable knowing of freedom and love as the essence of reality.
For several years, Amoda remained in a quiet period of integration, letting the light of this realization permeate every corner of her life. In 2012, she began to speak publicly—initially in small gatherings at her home—inviting spiritual seekers to a path of openness, truth, and an inner transformation of consciousness.
Since 2016, Amoda has lived in the United States, offering in-person retreats, deep immersions, and online gatherings in service to a growing global sangha. She is the author of several books, including Embodied Enlightenment, Falling Open in a World Falling Apart, and the soon to be published Unveiling the Light of Being. Her teachings are shared under the auspices of the Amoda Maa Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the transmission of awakened consciousness in the world.
She lives in New Mexico with her husband, Kavi, who is associate teacher and co-director of the Amoda Maa Foundation.
About Kavi
Kavi walks the path of the mystic through the language of poetry, the intimacy of presence, and a heartfelt reverence for the unseen dimension of reality.
For over two decades, he has shared life with Amoda Maa, contributing a quiet depth and poetic sensibility to the unfolding expression of the teaching.
Born in Hertfordshire, England, into English and Scottish heritage, Kavi’s early life was marked by emotional challenges that seeded a lifelong quest for healing and wholeness. This quest led him into the presence of a fierce Irish “warrior” teacher whose uncompromising guidance shattered inner defenses and set him on a path of truth. A long journey of recovery from chronic illness followed, through which he came into profound contact with the innate intelligence of life.
His love of Rumi’s ecstatic poetry has long been a companion on this path—infusing his language with the fragrance of the sacred and giving voice to the inexpressible.
Since 2003, Kavi has been immersed in a shared life with Amoda Maa. Being in the field of unconditional love at the heart of her teaching catalyzed a natural deepening of realization. In 2022, he stepped more visibly into the role of associate teacher, and has since served as co-founder and co-spiritual director of the Amoda Maa Foundation. He offers one-to-one sessions, online meetings, and ongoing support for the teachings.
Kavi’s poems—shared widely on social media and brought to life through a recorded audio collection in his own voice—have touched many with their raw honesty and contemplative beauty. A forthcoming book, Poems of Grace, gathers these pieces into a single offering.
